I need your advice

I've just discovered the power and ease of use that object databases
can provide. I've been evaluating them for use in my current project,
which is an Educational Testing Program for schools. Problem is that
all object databases (like POET, objectivity, etc) cost an arm and a leg
to use (and then they don't even give you the multi-user version!).

I've come to the conclusion that we cannot afford these databases.
This is a fairly big project, which a lot of people will be depending on
me to make work.

    My question is:

Would it be feasible to use an open-source ODBMS like storedObjects
or Ozone in my project?
Or is it just too risky?

Are there any "cheap" OODBs that might be more stable.

After seeing the power of OODBs I REALLY don't want to go back to a
relational model. But I'm afraid I may be forced to.

Thanks for any advice,
